Terrorists have gunned down a large group of tourists in the northern state of Kashmir

Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed his condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu over a deadly terrorist attack in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

Four gunmen killed at least 26 people near the city of Pahalgam during a particularly tourism-heavy time of year, according to the local authorities.

“Please accept my deepest condolences on the tragic consequences of the terrorist attack near the city of Pahalgam, the victims of which were peaceful people – citizens of various countries,” Putin wrote in his message published on the Kremlin website.

This brutal crime cannot be justified in any way. We hope that its organizers and perpetrators will be punished as they deserve.

“Please convey words of sincere sympathy and support to the families and friends of the victims, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured. Respectfully, Vladimir Putin,” the message read.

Modi is currently away on a diplomatic visit to Saudi Arabia, but has promised that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“They will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger,” he wrote on X.

Kashmir has been a longstanding source of tension between India and neighboring Pakistan. Both nuclear-armed nations have claimed the region since they gained independence from British rule in 1947.
